I can smell gas: what to do right now
If you can smell gas, treat it as an emergency. Gas is dangerous when it builds up, so the priority is to ventilate, avoid any spark, and get everyone out.
Do this immediately
Open doors and windows to let the gas out. Get everyone outside and stay there. Do not light anything, and do not touch any electrical switches, power points or even your phone while inside, a spark can ignite gas.
Turn off the gas if it is safe
If you can reach it safely, turn off the gas at the meter or bottle by turning the valve a quarter turn so it sits across the pipe. If you cannot reach it safely, leave it and get clear.
Call for help
From outside, call 000 if it is serious, and your gas distributor emergency line (the number is on your gas bill). Do not go back inside or use any gas appliance until a licensed gas fitter has checked and cleared it.
Common questions
Can I find and fix a gas leak myself?
No. Gas work must be done by a licensed gas fitter, and DIY gas repairs are both illegal and dangerous in Queensland. Make the area safe and call a professional.
What does a gas leak smell like?
Natural gas and LPG have a deliberate rotten-egg smell added so you can detect them. If you notice that smell, a hissing near a gas line, or feel unusually unwell indoors, act straight away.
