Diagnose a problem

No hot water? A simple troubleshooting checklist

No hot water is rarely random. A handful of checks will tell you whether it is something simple you can reset, or a fault that needs a plumber. If you smell gas at any point, stop and follow our gas-leak steps.

Checks for any system

Make sure the unit actually has power or gas, and water reaching it. At your switchboard, look for a tripped breaker (sitting in the middle or off) and flip it fully off then on. Check the dedicated on/off switch on the wall near the unit, and that the thermostat is not turned right down.

Electric systems

Many electric units run on a separate off-peak (controlled load) circuit, so check that breaker too. If the unit keeps tripping the breaker, stop resetting it and call a plumber, it usually means a failed element or a leak.

Gas systems

Check the gas is on and, on older units, that the pilot light is lit (follow the relighting steps printed on the unit). If it will not stay lit, the unit needs a service.

Common questions

I have hot water but it runs out fast, why?

Running out quickly usually means too much demand for the tank size, a failing element or thermostat, or sediment build-up reducing capacity. If it changed suddenly, it is worth a service.

How long should a hot water system last?

Most storage systems last around 8 to 12 years. If yours is near that age and failing, repair may be a short-term fix and replacement the better value. We will give you an honest call.
