Backflow testing in Queensland: what, why and how often
Backflow prevention keeps contaminated water from flowing back into the drinking supply. In Queensland, testable backflow devices must be tested every year, and it is the property owner who is responsible for keeping it current.
What backflow prevention is
A backflow prevention device stops water from a property (for example from irrigation, a fire service or a commercial process) flowing back into the public drinking water. Properties with a higher contamination risk are required to have testable devices fitted.
How often it must be tested
Testable devices must be inspected and tested every twelve months by a licensed backflow tester, with the results lodged to the local water service provider (such as Urban Utilities in Brisbane). Arranging it is the owner responsibility.
What happens if it lapses
Letting testing lapse can lead to non-compliance notices and fines from the water authority. For sites with several devices, scheduling the testing so nothing slips is the easy way to stay compliant.
