Plumbing emergencies

What to do when a pipe bursts

When a pipe bursts, every minute counts. The goal is simple: stop the water, remove any electrical risk, and get a plumber on the way. Here is exactly what to do.

1. Turn off the water at the mains

Find your water meter at the front of the property, usually near the boundary under a cover marked Water. Turn the stop valve off: a lever-style valve turns 90 degrees so it sits across the pipe, a round or T-handle turns clockwise until it stops. Then open a tap inside to confirm the flow has stopped. If the valve is stiff, use firm steady pressure, but do not force it.

2. Remove the electrical risk

If water is near power points, lights or your switchboard, turn off the electricity at the main switch and do not touch wet electrical fittings. Water and power together is the real danger in a flood.

3. Make safe, then call a plumber

Switch off your hot water system, move valuables clear and soak up what you can. Then call a plumber. Take a photo of the damage for your insurer, and for your records if you rent or manage the property.

Common questions

Where is my water meter?

In most Queensland homes it is at the front of the property near the street boundary, under a metal, concrete or plastic cover marked Water. The shut-off valve is inside that box next to the meter.

The mains valve is stuck, what now?

Do not force it, you can snap it and make things worse. Use steady pressure; if it will not move, call a plumber, and for a severe leak your water authority can shut the supply at the street.

Should I try to repair the pipe myself?

Stop the water and make safe, but leave the repair to a licensed plumber so it is fixed properly and does not fail again.
