Why is my water bill suddenly so high?
If your water bill has jumped without any change in how you use water, something is usually quietly wasting it. The good news is the causes are common and findable.
The most likely cause: a leak
A hidden or underground leak, or a running toilet, is the number one cause of a surprise bill. Run the meter test (turn everything off and watch the meter) to confirm, then track it down.
Running toilets and dripping taps
A toilet that keeps running can waste more water than anything else in the house, often silently. A single dripping tap adds up to thousands of litres a year. Both are usually quick, inexpensive fixes.
Other causes
Irrigation left running or leaking, a hot water relief valve weeping to the drain, or simply more people and use over summer. If usage looks normal but the bill is high, treat it as a leak until proven otherwise.
Common questions
How do I know if it is a leak or just higher use?
Do the meter test: turn off all water and check whether the meter still moves. If it does with everything off, it is a leak, not usage.
Who pays for a leak in a rental?
It depends on the leak and the tenancy. Fixed water-service charges sit with the owner; a tenant is generally only charged for water used, and only where the property meets Queensland water-efficiency rules. A manager can help sort responsibility.
