Getting your plumbing ready for storm season

South East Queensland storm season runs roughly October to March, and it puts your gutters, downpipes and stormwater drains to the test. A little preparation goes a long way.

Clear gutters and downpipes

Blocked gutters overflow back into the roof, walls and eaves. Clear leaves and debris before the season, especially under trees, so water can actually get away.

Check your stormwater drains

Clear visible debris from stormwater grates and pits so water can flow. Pooling water, slow drainage or gurgling during rain are signs of a blockage worth clearing before the big downpours.

Mind the trees and the back-up risk

Trim trees near drains to reduce root intrusion. In low-lying areas heavy rain can also surcharge the sewer, so if your drains gurgle or back up in a storm, get them checked.

Common questions

When is storm season in South East Queensland?

Roughly October through to March, with the heaviest storms usually over summer. Getting your drainage sorted before October is ideal.

My yard floods in heavy rain, what can I do?

Persistent pooling usually means undersized, blocked or damaged stormwater drainage. A plumber can clear it, camera it, or improve the drainage so it copes with a real downpour.
